Manager Restricted Substances and Environmental Compliance

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Manages a public apparel company’s response to global chemical, environmental and related product safety regulations, including research, tracking, risk assessment, strategy development, oversight of compliance programs, data analysis, and communications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Management of the Restricted Substance program:

  • Maintain and regularly update company’s “Restricted Substance List” (RSL) -- chemicals that must be controlled by our suppliers in the production process. Work closely with outside chemical experts and other sources to research chemicals and assure list is technically sound.
  • Run the RSL Testing Program. Includes selecting styles for testing every season, utilizing various company systems to extract information to guide risk-based selection; managing relationship with testing lab; communicating critical failures up the chain; and informing Global Production/Merchandising as needed when shipments must be held or cancelled.
  • Maintain database of test results for analysis of vendor and product risk. Includes developing analytical model for RSL results to create more effective and efficient monitoring programs. Manage relationship with outside database provider to enhance system.
  • Communicate regularly on RSL with key business partners such as company Product Development, Sourcing Leadership, and Legal. Train business partners on RSL.
  • Research and develop cost-effective tools to enhance Supply Chain’s compliance to RSL. Leverage company’s participation in industry trade organizations working jointly on this effort.
  • Management of response to global chemical regulations in our markets, which are increasing in pace and potential impact to the company.
  • Research, track, and assess chemical, environmental and product related regulation.
  • With management, develop strategies to manage the risk proactively, engage management, and initiate actions to execute strategies. Includes partnering with Legal/Compliance, benchmarking with retail associations, and consulting with outside experts as needed for risk assessments (e.g., under California’s Proposition 65).
  • Communicate regularly with key business partners on policies and programs.
  • Provide advice and technical support to business on chemical issues they must address. Utilize outside resources as needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Abilities

  • Strong research and analytical skills, including fluency with spreadsheets
  • High attention to detail, organization and follow-through
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to evaluate complex, diverse factors, form policy recommendations, and communicate with Leadership
  • Ability to travel (10%)
  • High level proficiency with Excel, MS Word, Power Point and other MS Office applications.

Qualifications

  • Three years of experience or post-graduate degree
  • Legal or regulatory background desirable
  • Chemical /Quality Assurance background a plus
